EDUCATION and OUTREACH COMMITTEE
by: Cody
2011-04-28 11:40:54

March was Embrace Aging month, sponsored yearly by the Greater Victoria Eldercare Foundation and Vancouver Island Health Authority.

March 17, 2011, Patti Parkyn, VLSCS member and past Chair and Alexandra Henriques from Vancouver's Qmunity: BC Queer Resources presented two sessions on Seniors and Sexual Diversity at the Hillside Seniors Wellness Centre. The focus was to improve lesbian visibility and inclusiveness in senior services sectors.

Both sessions were well attended for an inaugural launch.

We have had a follow-up request to assist an organization in reviewing its documents and physical plant to ensure inclusiveness. We hope to have more of these requests in the future.

If you would like to get involved in doing this worthwhile work, training sessions are being planned for later this year. Contact info@vlscs.ca with attn. Patti.

Coffee Talk - January 13, 2013
by: Cody
2013-01-18 13:11:32

Hello everybody!  Our new Coffee Talk co-ordinator, Linda, is pleased to report that we have been having great success at our meetings!  Often more than a dozen women gather to re-connect with old friends and meet new ones.    To date, we have met at Moka House on Hillside, Moxie's Restaurant on Yates, and next we'll try Romeo's on Hillside, near Shelbourne.  We are open to finding other venues that would work, to give us variety, so we welcome your suggestions!  We need to consider ease of access (few or no stairs), ambiance, and lots of space in view of the turnouts.  It was also agreed that we'd meet twice a month, for those who needed a choice in dates, on the second and fourth Sunday of every month.  Place and time will always be noted at the top of the Home Page!!  Thanks to all who have attended.  We have really blasted off!

HEALTH SUPPORT FUND
by: Cody
2007-02-09 09:49:26

The Health Fund provides reimbursement to VLSCS members who live in Greater Victoria (including the lower Gulf islands) for the cost of products and services for health related concerns not subsidised by other resources.

Eligibility criteria and maximum allocations have been established by the Board to serve our community in an equitable fashion. A designated amount of proceeds from the GALA dance held in the fall each year and other fund-raising efforts raised by VLSCS go directly towards the Health Fund. You are invited to contribute to the VLSCS Health Support Trust Fund which provides assistance with the costs of health care to women in our community who are in need. If you require further information, or would like an application form to request reimbursement you can find it online, click here. Please feel free to contact the Society: email info@vlscs.ca

Coffee Talk and Friendly Visitor Updates
by: Cody
2012-11-28 07:01:50

December 13, 2012

Dear Members and Friends of VLSCS

Our newly elected Board is excited about rejuvenating VLSCS and we’re calling on your enthusiasm and energy to help rebuild Coffee Talk and the Friendly Visitor Program. Having these two important programs up and running again is one of our major goals.

Coffee Talk: We have two potential volunteers on the committee to host Coffee Talk. Due to previous commitments, however, they will not be available until well into the New Year. We’re hoping that some of you dynamic women will volunteer to help organize and host this event. Our first meeting will be held at:

Moka House on Hillside: Sunday, January 13th at 1:00 p.m.

A Board member will host, and the topic will be: “Where do we go from here?” We’ll be looking for ideas and volunteers to help make Coffee Talk interesting, fun and viable again. So bring your thoughts and energy and join us for coffee. For further information please send a request to coffetalk@vlscs.ca.

The Friendly Visitor Program

For this important program we still have visitor volunteers! This is fantastic! What we don’t have is anyone to ‘visit’. Julie Thacker, one of our Co-Chairs is thinking of ways we can build this program. She’s available for an informal meeting any time on either Tuesdays or Wednesdays. Let her know which day (Tuesday or Wednesday) and what time (morning, afternoon, or evening) would work for you. Contact friendlyvisitor@vlscs.ca.

Your Board appreciates all the great volunteer help you’ve given us in the past. Now we look forward to having enthusiastic volunteers step up and ensure the success of both Coffee Talk and The Friendly Visitor Program. We are counting on you!

Sincerely,

VLSCS 2012/13 Board

Board Resignation
by: Cody
2012-08-14 20:36:41

Hi all VLSCS members
It is with regret that we accepted the resignation for personal reasons of our faithful board member and volunteer coordinator, Mare Lane, July 10, 2012. We will all miss her enthusiasm and generous contributions to VLSCS in fulfilling her roles for over seven years.
Until our AGM September 16, Julie Thacker is stepping in as interim Volunteer Coordinator and board member.
Sincerely
The current board of VLSCS
