I Shot Andy Warhol (1996) Biography Crime Drama 103 min
Director Mary Harron bases her film on the true story of Valerie
Solanas (played by Lili Taylor), who was a 60's radical preaching
hatred towards men. Solanas authored the Scum Manifesto, and turning
a lesbian psychopath into a sympathetic character is a study in the
complexity of the human animal. The misunderstandings between the
sexes form the basis for entering the mind of this misguided woman.
Jared Harris plays Andy Warhol, the icon of camp art.

Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit (1989) Drama 165 min
Director Beeban Kidron won the best feature film audience award in
1990 for this film about fundamentalism and homophobia, when it
played at the San Francisco International Lesbian and Gay Film
Festival. Jessica (played by Geraldine McEwan) devotes her life to
Jesus and the teachings of Pastor Finch until her friendship with
Melanie (Cathryn Bradshaw) develops into what the church considers to
be 'unnatural'. The teens are subjected to terrible treatment to get
them to repent. Based on a novel and screenplay written by Jeannette
Winterson, this film won McEwan a BAFTA award for best actress.

Helen Mirren plays Chase Phillips, an upper-middle class resident of
Martha's Vineyard, married to Richard (Beau Bridges). Her distaste
for artificiality leads her to a wild breakdown, and Richard hires a
'Mother's Helper', Elizabeth (Kyra Sedgwick), to restore family
order. Chase is broken and wickedly caustic towards Elizabeth, until
they discover one another's similarities. A strong relationship
develops, affecting their personal and familial destinies. Directed
by Kevin Bacon.

Shy (Silas Howard) is a small town butch which a nagging messiah
complex to heads to the big city to immerse herself in a life of
crime. On her Journey, she meets Valentine (Harriet Dodge) a wise-
acre adoptee searching for her birthmother. The movie was written
and directed by the women who play the lead roles, and won awards at
the Sundance Film Festival, South by South West and Outfest for best
screen play. Visually stunning and superbly acted, it is a highly
original first feature film, taking bold creative and cultural risks
with gender exploration. The film is described as emotionally
riveting and transformative.

Whip It (2009) Sports Drama 111 min
Drew Barrymore directs this vibrant story of 17 year old Bliss
Cavendar (Ellen Page) whose life in Bodeen, Texas is boringly divided
between her father's love of football and her mother's desire to
place Bliss in beauty pageants. A waitress at the Oink Joint, Bliss
persuades her friend Pash (Alia Shawkat) to see a roller derby with
her in Austin, Texas where Bliss subsequently lies about her age to
get unto the Roller Derby team of tatooed and zany females. Despite
an unhappy affair with the male lead singer in a rock band, Bliss
manages to win over her friends and family and continue with her
passion for the Roller Derby. Shauna Cross wrote the novel and the
screenplay for Whip It.
