Puccini for Beginners (2007) Comedy 1 hr 21 min
Maria Maggenti's screwball comedy features a commitment-phobic
Allegra Castiglione (Elizabeth Reaser) , whose lesbian lover dumps
her for her inability to say "I love you". She surprises herself by
falling in love with a man (Philip), a dapper Columbia professor
played by Justin Kirk; and beds Grace, (Gretchen Mol) a recently
straight woman. While juggling two romances that are advancing way
to quickly for comfort, she learns that Grace and Philip are also
carrying on an affair with one another. The dialogue has been
described as smart and snappy and the performances as effortlessly
charming. Set against the background of New York and the music of
Puccini, chance meetings alter destinies and anything is possible.
Maggenti also directed The Incredible True Adventures of Two Girls in
Love.

Marlene (2009) Documentary 91 min Some German with English subtitles
Marlene Deitrich, actress and singer, was one of the most iconic
bisexuals in film, a drag king whose androgynous look was part of
her appeal. Born in Berlin in 1901, she died in 1992. She became a
U.S. citizen in 1939, and was one of the first to entertain the
troops on the front lines. She spoke out against the Nazis, facism
and racism and conducted numerous affairs with men and women,
including poet and film director Mercedes de Acosta; married director
Rudolf Sieber in 1923 and had an open marriage with him, conducting
rumoured affairs with Edith Piaf, Frank Sinatra and John Kennedy. Her
daughter Elisabeth Sieber Riva wrote her mother's biography.
In this 1984 film directed by Maximilian Schell, the reclusive film
star is heard and not seen, commenting upon her life and loves as do
others close to the very private star. In one of her famous films,
Morocco, she wears a tuxedo and kisses a woman. She earned cudoes
for The Devil is a Woman, Dishonored, Shanghai Express, Blonde Venus
and the Scarlet Empress.

Garbo (2005) Documentary 86 min
Narrated by Julie Christie, this documentary about Greta Garbo
(1905-1990) who played roles such as Mata Hari, Queen Christina, Anna
Karenina and Camille, presents good analysis, great footage from many
of her films, comments from family, friends and acquaintances. A
bisexual film star with a passion for secrecy, Garbo was also the
lover of director-poet Mercedes de Acosta, and prone to shower de
Acosta with both attention and neglect. The two were introduced to
one another in 1931 by de Acosta's lover at the time, Salka Viertel.
Garbo has been described as the love of de Acosta's life. A portrait
of the reclusive star Greta Garbo is offered through the eyes of
biographers Barry Paris, Mark Vieira and Karen Swanson, actor-
playwright Charles Busch, Garbo's niece and great nephews, and
acquaintances Gore Vidal, Gavin Lambert, Jack Larson and confidante
Sam Gree.

Save Me (2007) Drama 1 hr 33 min
A decade in the making, Robert Cary's Save Me is a film about Mark
(Chad Allen) a lost young gay man who leads a life of drugs and
meaningless sex until he overdoses and is sent to Genesis House by
his parents. The House is run by Gayle (Judith Light) and her
husband Ted (Stephen Lang), who are determined to save young
homosexual men from their personal demons. Scott (Robert Gant) is
Mark's mentor, and the growing friendship between the two men
threatens Gayle's carefully controlled world. Torn by the specter of
damnation and the pull of their hearts, Mark and Scott are forced to
confront their own truth. Superbly shot in the desert of New Mexico
the film boasts exceptionally layered performances from its gifted
stars. |
