Orlando
(1992)

Britain's Sally Potter adapts Virginia Woolf's Orlando to film. A young nobleman, Orlando (Tilda Swinton) is commanded by Queen Elizabeth I (Quentin Crisp) to stay forever young. The film follows him through several centuries of British history, in which he experiences a variety of lives and relationships until he changes his gender, partly fed up and disgusted with how men think and act. As a woman of nobility, Orlando continues her journey to experience the truth about life, love and approaching one's own sex in 18th century England. Orlando discovers that androgeny is the key to her happiness as well as that of her daughter. Nominated for two Oscars for its brilliant visual design.
